The Situation

Two prominent law firms from California and Colorado retained our experts to reconstruct an accident in the courtroom through virtual reality headsets that involved an on-site injury of a railroad employee (plaintiff). Our Accident Reconstruction and Visualization team utilized video analysis and photogrammetry techniques to determine what happened in the accident and to animate the sequence of events that resulted in the plaintiff’s injuries. Through our detailed analysis, we determined the time and space relationship between the movement of locomotive cars and the movement of the plaintiff across the railroad tracks.

How We Advised

Our Accident Reconstruction and Visualization team has been developing technology for analyzing videos and photographs for the past two decades. We recreate the sequence of events through photo-realistic visual means such as physically scaled models, computer animations, and virtual reality environments to peer-reviewed scientific techniques to help the trier of fact visualize how the incident occurred. In this case, our experts digitally mapped the accident scene and developed the scan data into a fully scaled computer environment. This computer environment was used to create a scaled physical model, real-time computer animations, and an immersive photo-realistic nighttime virtual reality environment experienced through high-definition 32Gb Oculus Go headsets. Our team’s substantive and demonstrative evidence allowed the jury to understand the complex details of the accident sequence; the lighting and visibility issues; and the time, space, and scale relationships between the injured employee and the train environment.

Highlights

  • J.S. Held’s experts set the stage and pioneered the use of virtual reality headsets in Southern California Courts.
  • Scaled physical models remain incredibly important regarding demonstrative evidence. The model created by our experts was used in front of the jury for three weeks.
  • Our team leveraged calibrated nighttime imagery in a virtual environment to provide an incredibly realistic visual.
