J.S. Held investigated and reconstructed an accident that occurred at the intersection of San Juan Avenue and Lindberg Drive in Jacksonville, Florida. The accident occurred between a left turning 2018 IC Corporation School Bus and a pedestrian crossing the roadway.
Our team first inspected, documented, photographed, and scanned the accident site and the subject school bus involved in the accident. We built a bus face using lights from an exemplar bus to determine visibility of a pedestrian in similar lighting to that of the accident scene. Additionally, we produced a scaled computer model of the crash site based on the three-dimensional digital scan data collected during the site inspection. Video from the school bus contained four different viewpoints which we analyzed to determine the position of the pedestrian when they would have first been visible to the bus driver as well as speed, position, and timing of the school bus. Using scan data, our team was able to create 3D models of the school bus and the site to determine visual line of sight using the bus driver’s height and position in the driver’s seat. A human factors analysis helped determine whether the accident was avoidable, and time and distance diagrams showed the sequence of events leading up to and immediately following the bus’s impact with the pedestrian.
