J.S. Held Acquires Technorm, Québec’s Leading Forensic, Building Safety & Compliance Experts
Read MoreAs a result of a delayed ignition to the heating hot water system boilers, a boiler exploded, damaging the associated exhaust ductwork and the unit cabinet. The damages totaling over $500K included the replacement of the subject boiler and temporary equipment to restore the building operations.
J.S. Held’s equipment consulting team of MEP engineers was engaged to determine the cause and origin of a delayed ignition, determine the scope of the damage, and provide an estimate for the cost of the repaired/replacement equipment. We determined that the cause of the delayed ignition was an improper air/gas ratio while the unit was being serviced. Our experts partnered with the mechanical contractors to jointly assess the boiler equipment, develop repair solutions, and restore the system to operating conditions. With the implementation of temporary measures, the mechanical contractor restored operations three days after the incident. Our recommendation involved restoring the system to pre-loss conditions by replacing the subject boiler with a like-kind unit and repairing the exhaust ductwork. The insured determined that both of their boilers should be replaced, and their exhaust system should be upgraded to better control the exhaust pressure in the ductwork system.
