J.S. Held Acquires GLI Advisors, Strengthening Our Construction Project Support Services in the Western US and Hawaii
Read MoreDuring a high wind event, the drop forge manufacturing facility lost electrical power when the electrical utility overhead wire pole fractured, damaging the east building’s 480V / 3-phase electrical feeders. The insured submitted a claim for the repairs and additional work to install underground feeders instead of the existing overhead feeders. The new underground feeders would meet electrical code requirements, which list clearances between feeders and adjacent areas (such as roofs) previously not met at this plant. The claim included approximately $50K for lie-kind electrical repairs and an additional $225K submitted for code upgrades, including increasing the existing 1200 ampere electrical service to 3000 amperes.
MEP engineers from our Equipment Consulting Practice analyzed the electrical codes. Our experts worked with local utility and code officials to determine the electrical feeder requirements and whether the loss event triggered the proposed electrical code upgrades. Our team reviewed the electrical codes for this existing facility which we discussed with local code officials. We found that the proposed code upgrades were only required for new installations, including increasing the existing 1200 ampere electrical system to 3000 amperes, but not to repair the overhead system to pre-loss condition. Therefore, the claim was closed with like-kind repairs approved and no further code upgrade work required.
