The Situation

The chimney was part of a heritage building being seismically upgraded and structurally expanded. As part of the upgrades, the chimney was to be filled with freshly poured reinforced concrete. Three pours were planned to be implemented. The chimney suddenly collapsed when the third pour was being conducted.

How We Advised

J.S. Held’s Building Consulting and Forensic Architecture & Engineering (FA&E) teams were engaged to address aspects of the loss. We investigated the cause of the collapse and commented on the remedial design to rebuild the chimney after the incident, with a focus on the former. As requested, J.S. Held furnished an investigation report to address the cause of the loss.
