We were engaged by a resort in North Florida to evaluate continuous damage to their wood flooring in a restaurant structure that had an elevated floor system. The new flooring cupped after being repeatedly replaced.
During the investigation, we identified that the front of the structure had been lifted and underpinned. This movement of the previously settled (over time) building created gaps at the through columns to the floor decking, allowing for enough exchange of hot/humid air into the conditioned space, causing cupping and water condensation on top of the subfloor and beneath the newly installed wood flooring. Infrared technology was able to pick up the temperature differentials and the flow of the warm air into the cool interior space concentrated at the columns. After seeing the images, the flooring was removed, and the gaps were identified and fixed to help get the building back in service.
We were able to use our unique expertise and technology (infrared thermography) to determine the cause of the issue quickly and efficiently so that the client could get back up and running.
