J.S. Held Releases Insights on Risks & Opportunities Expected to Impact Organizations in 2025
Read MoreA large utility transformer, which provides electrical service to the City of Newark, failed and went offline for unknown reasons. The transformer was integral to the communications and switches for the rest of the yard but was skid mounted and the largest in the switchyard, so it could not be easily removed for analysis.
J.S. Held’s Equipment Consulting Practice was engaged to determine the cause of the transformer failure, recommend repair scope, evaluate contractor proposals, and provide an independent estimate for repair. Prior to an on-site inspection, our team reviewed the alarm and trip logs produced for the SCADA online monitoring system and preliminary testing results conducted by the insured’s contractors. J.S. Held also
performed a transformer hydraulic oil analysis, which involved tracking the raw sample data and providing advanced analysis of the change in contaminant ratios over time. The City of Newark, J.S. Held, and contractors performed a joint site inspection that involved testing and repairing work for the city. The transformer oil was drained during the visit, and we conducted an in-situ inspection of the coils to find a bulging condition in the center winding of the transformer. We recommended a repair scope of de-tanking the windings and a complete system rewind. Our team also provided a range-of-magnitude estimate for the client to compare to contractor proposals.
