The Situation

One of the largest global mining companies was considering investing in a central African country. The client needed to understand key sector dynamics ahead of the prospective acquisition. This included knowledge of the major actors, regulatory environment, and main operating risks. The client was particularly concerned about the business environment and reputational risks of operating a mining asset in the central African country. They also wanted to understand the history of the assets they were considering acquiring and whether this would create future reputational challenges.

How We Advised

To inform its potential asset acquisition, the client engaged our team to provide an in-depth, long-form report on key dynamics in the central African country’s mining sector. We also performed an enhanced due diligence investigation for the client, with team members conducting in-country visits to mine sites.

The research methodology, in this case, took a varied and multi-pronged approach. We conducted in-depth research on political developments, legal systems, finance and taxation laws, social issues, and operational risks. We also analyzed the current and historical political landscape, as well as the future trajectory of the country’s mining sector. Our project team focused on understanding the characteristics of the sector and how the challenges and opportunities that we identified would impact the client’s future ability to operate effectively.

Our experts conducted both primary and secondary research. Primary research consisted of gathering intelligence through well-placed sources within our extensive source network in the mining sector and collecting information during mine site visits. Secondary research predominantly consisted of desk-based research.

Our report was essential in helping the client to better understand the operating environment in and around the mining sector in the central African country and helped guide their strategy for market entry.
