The Situation

Companies are facing increased pressure to reduce their environmental footprint while remaining profitable. In Northern Canada, the industrial footprint of mineral extraction and decades-old seismic exploration has severely fragmented the boreal forest, degrading critical caribou habitat. Existing industrial operations in the area further contribute to this problem.

An industrial operation in the region was looking for a nature-based restoration project and improving mineral extraction operational practices to reduce deforestation, mend the fragmented landscape, and  contribute to the recovery of caribou populations within their operational area.

How We Advised

J.S. Held identified the potential for carbon offset value in the client’s land restoration activities, developing a high-integrity carbon offset project that restored caribou habitat and generated revenue for the organization through the sale of carbon credits. This multi-step initiative included:

Project Ideation and Feasibility: J.S. Held collaborated with the client to identify the most impactful and feasible carbon offset project. A detailed feasibility study ensured the technical viability, financial soundness, and potential carbon sequestration benefits of this approach, along with a social and environmental impact assessment to minimize any unintended consequences.

Registry, Methodology, and Model Review: J.S. Held conducted a thorough analysis of leading carbon registries, methodologies, and forest carbon models. The analysis focused on maximizing the accuracy and value of generated carbon credits while minimizing additional data collection requirements.

Carbon Standard Selection and Project Design: J.S. Held developed a comprehensive Project Design Document (PDD) detailing the project's methodology, baseline emissions calculations, and a meticulous plan for measurement, monitoring, and verification (MMV).

MMV Implementation: J.S. Held oversaw the implementation of the MMV plan, ensuring rigorous data collection on tree growth, carbon sequestration rates, and broader ecological impacts. The plan included both data collection and forest carbon modeling.

Validation and Verification: J.S. Held facilitated independent third-party audits to validate the initial project design and provide ongoing verification, upholding the standards and integrity of the carbon credits generated.

Carbon Credit Issuance and Monetization: Upon successful verification, J.S. Held assisted the client in navigating the carbon markets, connecting them with potential buyers of their high-quality carbon offsets to generate revenue for ongoing restoration efforts and support their sustainability goals.

Project Reporting and Monitoring: J.S. Held established an annual reporting framework to provide the client and stakeholders with detailed updates on project progress, carbon sequestration metrics and ecological impact. These reports will ensure transparency, accountability, and facilitate ongoing optimization of the project.
