Read MoreDr. Scott Malm is a toxicologist and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) with extensive experience in occupational and environmental health sciences, specializing in toxicology, industrial hygiene, and human health risk assessment. His work spans a wide range of exposure-related concerns, including emergency response, chemical risk evaluation, and litigation support across occupational, community, and consumer-based environments.
Dr. Malm has supported numerous hazardous materials emergencies, providing both on-site and remote toxicological and industrial hygiene expertise. His responsibilities have included deriving exposure thresholds using toxicological principles, developing air and environmental sampling plans, interpreting analytical results, and collaborating with first responders, regulatory agencies, and affected communities. His technical capabilities extend to the evaluation of volatile organic compounds, combustion byproducts, hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, asbestos, silica, acid gases, and emissions from lithium battery fires.
In addition to emergency response, Dr. Malm has led projects involving assessments of indoor and outdoor air quality, personal and area industrial hygiene sampling, water and soil quality evaluations, remediation clearance testing, and nuisance odor investigations. His work is grounded in a strong scientific foundation and is frequently applied in support of regulatory compliance, risk communication, and expert testimony.
At J.S. Held, Dr. Malm serves as a Senior Toxicologist within the Environmental, Health, and Safety practice, where he provides scientific analysis and consulting services related to chemical exposure and environmental health risks.
He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Arizona. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry from Southern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
