Piers Dawson joined J.S. Held in May of 2023 as part of J.S. Held’s acquisition of Africa Matters Limited (AML). At AML, Piers served as a Managing Director, leading the company’s work on East Africa. Based between Kampala and London, he has a strong understanding of the political, economic, and commercial dynamics within the region, and has utilized this expertise to manage and deliver numerous client projects.
Piers specializes in advising the financial services and energy sectors, particularly development finance institutions, private equity firms, and power generation and distribution companies.
Piers was previously a fellow at Innovest Advisory – an impact investing consultancy – where he supported funds and impact enterprises to develop impact strategies and raise capital. Piers began his career in banking, latterly working in Lloyds Banking Group’s Capital Markets business.
Piers holds an MPhil in African Studies from the University of Cambridge, a BA in History from King’s College London, and both the CFA Society of the UK’s IMC and a Diploma in ESG Investing. He has also completed the University of Oxford, Saïd Business School's Executive Strategy Programme.
