Mikal Balmforth joined J.S. Held in February of 2023 as part of J.S. Held's acquisition of Failure Analysis & Prevention.
Mikal Balmforth’s areas of expertise include metallurgy and materials, welding engineering, and failure analysis. He specializes in providing solutions to issues and failures related to metallurgy, welding and joining metals/materials, welding processes, nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, quality control, and welding safety. He has performed metallurgical/materials failure analyses on a wide variety of materials, structures, and products including boilers, turbines, industrial equipment, buildings, cranes, pressure vessels, plumbing components, aircraft parts, pipelines, construction products, ladders, consumer products, and equipment, bicycles, etc. Mr. Balmforth has also performed fitness-for-service and damage assessments in refineries and power plants.
Mr. Balmforth works with a team of engineers, scientists, and technicians on the performance of on-site and laboratory investigations into the failure or degradation of various components, equipment, structures, and systems. He also conducts damage scope assessments following fires, explosions, and other catastrophic events.
