Dr. Michael Hussey is an epidemiologist whose primary professional focus has been determining the impact of long-term environmental chemical exposures over the human life course. His ability to critically evaluate evidence at the intersection of epidemiology and toxicology has also allowed him to assess the human health risk of chemical exposures and design research to support novel biotechnology development.
His investigations of human chemical exposures have mainly focused on developmental health, specifically the impacts of in-utero exposures to exogenous compounds and the role of poor maternal health on fetal growth and development. Specifically, he is primarily interested in the placental impacts of exposures to heavy metals (lead, cadmium, and mercury), multicomponent particulate matter, and maternal obesity, as well as the downstream impact of aberrant changes in placental epigenetic regulation. This work built upon his prior experience at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) performing retrospective epidemiologic analyses of health outcomes linked to mixed chemical exposures surrounding US National Priority List (NPL) sites, and is the basis for his present focus on PFAS compounds.
Dr. Hussey has also consulted for multiple years in biotech, supporting regulatory submissions for medical devices and research and development efforts for novel photochemical antimicrobial technologies.
Dr. Hussey’s work as a Health Scientist centers on data analysis and client litigation support, including direct review of case materials and construction of expert opinions based upon available epidemiologic and clinical evidence.
Both types of work involve evaluating available scientific evidence to assess the directionality and strength of relevant chemical–disease relationships. Dr. Hussey both designs and conducts statistical analyses in support of these efforts using internal and client data, including systematic reviews and meta-analysis of relevant literature for clients, presenting the findings of these analyses in a manner appropriate for the required audience.
