He brings deep expertise in product development, safety assessment, regulatory compliance, and chemical hazard evaluation across both consumer and professional product categories.
Prior to his consultancy career, James worked in chemical manufacturing, formulating detergents and cosmetic products, designing and scaling up R&D projects, developing Class I and II medical devices, authoring safety data sheets, evaluating raw materials, supporting quality control, and providing technical support to customers.
James is a fully qualified cosmetic safety assessor for the EU and UK. At J.S. Held, he manages regulatory compliance and safety-focused projects for cosmetics and consumer products. His work includes preparing and reviewing toxicological safety reports, conducting regulatory compliance assessments, substantiating on-pack claims, and performing formulation and artwork compliance reviews. He develops Product Information Files (PIFs) and manages global product notifications for the UK, EU, and US markets.
James also advises on CLP classifications for consumer products, safety data sheet (SDS) and labelling requirements, and supports projects involving EU/UK REACH obligations, industrial chemicals, and biocides.
James holds a First Class BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham. He is a Chartered Chemist (CChem), a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), and a participant in the CTPA Toxicology Working Group.
