Erin Potma, PhD, P.Eng., ACTAR, is a forensic engineering consultant specializing in injury biomechanics and vehicle accident reconstruction. An accredited accident reconstructionist, she has advanced training and research experience spanning biomedical engineering, medicine, and surgery.
Her expertise includes occupant kinematics, injury mechanisms, and collision dynamics in both low- and high-speed impacts, as well as the factors contributing to these events. Dr. Potma investigates incidents involving passenger and commercial vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, rollovers, and a range of personal injury scenarios, including slip, trip, and fall events, and sports and playground accidents.
As Director of Biomechanics at J.S. Held, she leads the biomechanical team, overseeing operations, mentoring staff, and developing internal practices. She also conducts comprehensive vehicle reconstruction and biomechanical evaluations, assessing human movement, injury consistency, and the relationship between applied forces and tissue injury. Her analyses integrate principles of physics, engineering, and biomechanics, supported by advanced computational modeling techniques.
Dr. Potma has been qualified as an expert in biomechanics, collision reconstruction, and mechanical engineering in courts across Canada and the United States. She communicates her findings clearly through detailed reports and expert testimony.
She holds a BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. in Mechanical and Materials Engineering from Queen’s University.
