Eric T. Carnick joined J.S. Held in March of 2022 as part of J.S. Held's acquisition of Ocean Tomo. Mr. Carnick is a Managing Director in Intellectual Property Disputes Financial Expert Testimony practice of Ocean Tomo, a part of J.S. Held. The practice quantifies economic damages in intellectual property and technology related matters. Mr. Carnick possesses over fifteen years of experience related to the assessment of damages in commercial disputes related to patent, trademark, and copyright infringement matters, and also has experience in trade secret misappropriation and technology related breach of contract matters. Mr. Carnick possesses a solid understanding of financial issues and damages theories related to intellectual property litigation. While specific issues vary by engagement, many have included evaluation and analysis of financial and strategic data to rebut quantification of lost profits, reasonable royalties, price erosion, or unjust enrichment. Further, Mr. Carnick has offered his expert opinions in federal court and arbitration through expert reports, deposition testimony, and trial testimony. He has consulted on more than 100 matters involving intellectual property damages, monetization, or valuation issues. His experience spans several industries including agriculture, automobiles, consumer electronics and other consumer goods, computer hardware, LED lighting, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, software, and telecommunications. Mr. Carnick contributes to the trial team addressing multiple AI copyright matters on behalf of content creators.

Outside of a litigation context, Mr. Carnick has experience with intellectual property valuation and has provided analytical support to clients engaged in licensing negotiations and business transactions. Mr. Carnick is also an IP teacher, Licensing Executive Society (LES) leader, published author, and Certified Licensing Professional (CLP). Mr. Carnick has provided instruction regarding IP damages at institutes of higher education, is currently Secretary of the Valuation and Pricing Committee for LES USA & Canada and has published several IP damages-related articles in well-recognized industry publications.

Mr. Carnick is an Evans Scholar alum. The Evans Scholarship Foundation provides full tuition and housing college scholarships for high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. To qualify, caddies must meet the requirements of having a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. Today, Mr. Carnick is actively involved in the Leadership Council for the Evans Scholarship Foundation, helping to send deserving young men and women with limited resources to college.

Mr. Carnick holds a B.S. in finance from the College of Business at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, graduating with honors.
