Eric T. Carnick joined J.S. Held in March of 2022 as part of J.S. Held's acquisition of Ocean Tomo. Mr. Carnick is a Managing Director in the Intellectual Properties Disputes Financial Expert Testimony practice, working from the Chicago headquarters of Ocean Tomo, a part of J.S. Held. The Expert Services practice area quantifies economic damages arising from intellectual property disputes and provides general litigation support.

Mr. Carnick has more than thirteen years of experience in assessing commercial damages in matters involving intellectual property. Outside of a litigation context, Mr. Carnick has experience with intellectual property valuation and has provided analytical support to clients engaged in licensing negotiations and business transactions. Mr. Carnick has consulted on numerous engagements involving intellectual property valuation and determining economic damages in commercial suits, including patent infringement, trade secret theft, and technology misappropriation litigation. He possesses a solid understanding of the financial issues and theories related to intellectual property litigation. While specific issues vary by engagement, most have included evaluation and analysis of financial and strategic data to support or rebut quantification of lost profits, reasonable royalties, price erosion, or unjust enrichment. He has supported counsel in all phases of the litigation process, from discovery to trial, and his experience spans several industries, including semiconductors, software, fiber optics, telecommunications, consumer electronics, pharmaceuticals, and the automotive industry. He has been qualified to testify in federal court as an expert witness on issues relating to intellectual property damages and has participated in more than five federal trials.

In addition to his role at Ocean Tomo, Mr. Carnick has also served as a teaching assistant at Chicago-Kent College of Law, as well as a guest lecturer at the Illinois Institute of Technology Masters of Intellectual Property Management and Markets Program, supporting Ocean Tomo Managing Directors in their role as adjunct professors. Additionally, he has participated in and supported the Notre Dame Law School Mock Trial Program as well as the Kirkland and Ellis Institute for Trial Advocacy.

Mr. Carnick is an Evans Scholar alum. The Evans Scholarship Foundation provides full tuition and housing college scholarships for high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. To qualify, caddies must have a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need, and outstanding character. Today, Mr. Carnick is actively involved in the Leadership Council for the Evans Scholarship Foundation, helping to send deserving young men and women with limited resources to college.

Mr. Carnick holds a B.S. in finance from the College of Business at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, graduating with honors.
