Chaz Mello holds a BFA in Industrial Design and gained hands-on experience in the construction industry while working for an excavation and site development contractor. His responsibilities included project estimating, crew management, and hands-on work, completing various residential and commercial projects involving excavation, site development, landscaping, and hardscaping.
His expertise primarily lies in excavating foundations and installing water/sewer lines, septic systems, and drainage solutions. He also has experience in road construction and pre-site development for residential and commercial properties.
In 2008, Chaz joined J.S. Held in response to Hurricane Ike and began broadening his insurance industry knowledge, specifically in property loss consulting. Since then, he has consulted on various property losses, from residential to complex large-loss commercial. Early in his consulting career, he earned IICRC certifications in Water Restoration, Applied Structural Drying, and Fire Restoration.
Chaz has consulted on significant loss events impacting major companies such as Hillshire Brands, BorgWarner, American Axel, and General Motors. He has experience as an appraiser, handling small to large complex appraisals. He has also served as an expert witness, having been deposed and provided testimony in court.
Currently, he serves as the U.S. Building Consulting Operations Lead at J.S. Held. He is also responsible for coordinating large-scale catastrophic (CAT) event responses, which involves managing resource deployment and overall team performance to ensure client satisfaction through accuracy and consistency in loss measurement and reporting.
